All You Ever Wanted to Know About Vampires
While vampires are made known in the Harry Potter books, their actual presence is underplayed at best, particularly compared to the robust information we have on werewolves. Since we now have a vampire character who was kind enough to come up with a reasonable list of vampire powers and weaknesses, we will post them here, for all your vampire knowledge needs.
Strengths/Abilities: - Superior strength - Superior speed & agility - Superior reflexes - Superior senses (hearing, smell and sight) & superior nightvision. - Immune to most diseases. - Heal nearly all injuries - Do not age.
Weaknesses: - Require blood to survive. Lack of blood will drive vampire into a state of dementia (known as blood frenzy) similiar to the dementia a transformed werewolf experiences. Vampires become extremely volatile, aggressive and feral and cannot differentiate friend from foe. If vampire does not feed, staying in this state for too long will drive them mad, and eventually lead to death. If a vampire does feed, they slowly regain their wits. - Are severely weakened by sunlight and cannot be exposed to it for more than 10 to 15 minutes at a time. Extended periods of time in sun will weaken vampire, until leading to eventual bloody frenzy and/or death. It must be direct sunlight to have a strong effect, though it is still not advised to be out even if the weather is overcast. - If previously a witch or wizard, they lose a large amount of their magical capabilities, and the abilities they do have are unpredictable. - Due to their sensitive senses, certain high frequency sounds are extremely painful for a vampire, and certain smells can cause them to be ill (like garlic). - Cannot eat normal food. Doing so will make them immediately ill. This also includes most beverages, except for water.
Other: - Can have sex and can procreate, though it is extremely hard for a vampire to conceive a child. If a child is conceived, it is even more rare that the child survives to term. - Religious symbols have no effect on a vampire. - Vampires can cross running water, do have reflections, and can cast shadows. - They cannot shapeshift. So there is no turning into a bat, or a wolf or a mist form. - They don't sleep in coffins. They actually don't require much sleep at all.
Ways to kill: - Burned alive. Vampires can heal from most skin burns, but once it begins to damage internal tissues and organs, it is beyond their ability to heal. - Decapitation. - Severing of the spinal cord at neck level - Massive head trauma that destroys most of brain. - Dismemberment. - Long term exposure to sunlight - Lack of blood. - Stake to heart does not kill a vampire, but renders them immediately weakened, and if stake is left in it will eventually lead to death.
